Book Week St Joseph Campus
Book Week was celebrated at the St Joseph campus from Monday 21st to Friday 25th August. Many activities took place to celebrate books and reading around the theme: Escape to Everywhere. The theme explored the idea that a book can transport you to faraway places, other worlds, other times and deep into your imagination; that it is the perfect escape!
The week was bookended by visits from two popular authors. On Monday, Scot Gardner entertained students in Years 9 and 10. He described his life as an author and inspirations for his writing with funny stories and anecdotes. He also prompted students to think deeply about more serious issues. In his writing workshops, students were given the freedom and encouragement to write.
On Friday, the successful author and stand-up comedian, Oliver Phommavanh, spoke to all Year 7 and Year 8 students. Oliver had students and teachers laughing at his antics and stories of how he has turned incidents from his childhood into funny stories. Following his talk, students interested in improving their writing attended a writing workshop with Oliver.
On Wednesday and Friday, students in Year Seven under the guidance of Ms Pote, held a book stall of donated books and games. The money raised was donated to the Room to Read foundation to help children in low-income countries achieve literacy and gender equality in education.
A variety of competitions were also held throughout the week. The competitions were very popular, generating much discussion. They included:
Daily quiz questions in the bulletin
Team-based fiction quiz held during break time
Writing competition on the theme of Escape to Everywhere
Escape challenges in the library
Guess the book title by the picture clues
BookFace photo competition
Library displays promoted different ways of escaping. Visitors to the library were greeted by an ocean scene with a ship hanging from the ceiling, while in another part of the library, a sky scene complete with a rocket and hot air balloons, was suspended from the ceiling.
