Indigenous Literacy Day
Wednesday, 7 September was Indigenous Literacy Day and the students at Cedar Campus commemorated the day by participating in The Great Book Swap for the third year in a row. This year the students swapped 197 books and raised $170 through making a gold coin donation.
This event was a fitting way of wrapping up an extremely busy term celebrating books, literature and enjoyment of reading. With our book launch, author visits, book fair, Book Week character parade, and performance incursion, the students had many opportunities to immerse themselves in the richness of imagination and creative language that books and reading can provide.
Unfortunately, there are many children in our country that are not so lucky to have such a wealth of reading rich experiences – particularly indigenous children living in remote communities. It is the aim of the Indigenous Literacy Foundation in 2016 to:-
gift 12,000 books through the early literacy Book Buzz program
gift 45,000 books to remote communities through the Book Supply program
publish six new community books the Community Literacy Project.
This can be achieved by schools such as ours making a commitment to social justice, holding The Great Book Swap and helping to address the literacy gap in remote Australia. If you would like to contribute to the money the students have raised already you can make a donation online here.
