World Read Aloud Day (WRAD)

February 16 is World Read Aloud Day (WRAD). Sometime throughout the day, teachers will be finding some way in which they can incorporate reading aloud to their students or have them read aloud to the teacher or other students in the class. Also, students have been asked to read aloud at home in the evening and get their parents involved. Record on the WRAD Reading Log who read, the title of the book and how many minutes they read for. Students in Foundation - Year 3 who participate will receive a WRAD badge and students in Year 4 - 6 will receive a WRAD bookmark. All families taking part will receive a certificate of participation.

When considering why we are participating in WRAD it is worthwhile looking at the following results taken from Scholastic’s Australian Kids & Family Reading Report released in 2016. It states:-

Among kids aged 6-17, 86% said they enjoyed being read aloud to at home because:

  • It’s a special time with my parent - 76%

  • Reading together is fun - 63%

  • It’s relaxing to be read to before I go to sleep - 56%
